{"id":108,"date":"2010-08-02T10:23:21","date_gmt":"2010-08-02T15:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/08\/02\/new-online-version-of-the-federal-register\/"},"modified":"2010-08-18T11:42:47","modified_gmt":"2010-08-18T16:42:47","slug":"new-online-version-of-the-federal-register","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/08\/02\/new-online-version-of-the-federal-register\/","title":{"rendered":"New online version of the Federal Register"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/08\/federal-register_gov.jpg\" title=\"FederalRegister.gov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/08\/federal-register_gov.jpg\" alt=\"FederalRegister.gov\" align=\"left\" height=\"301\" width=\"458\" \/><\/a>Last week the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/\" title=\"Government Printing Office\">Government Printing Office<\/a> (GPO), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofr.gov\/\" title=\"ofr.gov\">Office of the Federal Register<\/a> (OFR), and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/\" title=\"archives.gov\">National Archives and Records Administration<\/a> (NARA) jointly released a new, XML-based version of the Federal Register at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/\" title=\"Federalregister.gov\">FederalRegister.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This new site is important because much of the business of the United States government is conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/our-government\/federal-agencies-and-commissions\">federal agencies<\/a>\u2014in addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.congress.org\/\" title=\"Congress.org\">Congress<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/Home.aspx\" title=\"uscourts.gov\">United States courts<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/learn\/about\" title=\"About the Federal Register\">Federal Register<\/a> is the news magazine of the federal agencies.\u00a0 Published Monday through Friday, the Federal Register provides notice of new regulations, requests for comment on proposed regulations, and news about actions taken by agencies and the President.\u00a0 Attorneys who have clients involved in regulated industries (basically everything!) monitor the register for news affecting their clients.\u00a0 Here are two examples from today\u2019s Federal Register:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Department of Housing and Urban Development released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/articles\/2010\/08\/02\/2010-18906\/notice-of-availability-notice-of-funding-availability-nofa-for-fiscal-year-fy-2010-housing\">application information<\/a> for the FY2010 Housing Counseling Grant;<\/li>\n<li>The Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/articles\/2010\/08\/02\/2010-19031\/call-for-information-information-on-greenhouse-gas-emissions-associated-with-bioenergy-and-other\">corrected the text<\/a> of its July 15, 2010 Call for Information on accounting for greenhouse gas emissions from bioenergy sources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The new site is in beta.\u00a0 It is an <u>unofficial<\/u> version of the Federal Register for now, but the site provides links to the official PDF version in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/search\/home.action\" title=\"fdsys.gov\">FDsys.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The advantages of the new site include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reader-friendly font and format<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0News organized into six sections: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/money\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/money\">Money<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/environment\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/environment\">Environment<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/world\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/world\">World<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/science-and-technology\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/science-and-technology\">Science &amp; Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/business-and-industry\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/business-and-industry\">Business &amp; Industry<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/health-and-public-welfare\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/health-and-public-welfare\">Health &amp; Public Welfare<\/a><\/li>\n<li>News indexed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/topics\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/topics\">by topic<\/a><\/li>\n<li>News indexed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/agencies\" title=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/agencies\">by agency<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Calendar feature showing important dates for a given regulation<\/li>\n<li>Links for submitting comments on proposed regulations (could be improved&#8211;Cornell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/regulationroom.org\/\" title=\"http:\/\/regulationroom.org\/\">Regulation Room<\/a> is much better)<\/li>\n<li>Images<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My favorite new feature is the RSS feed.\u00a0 Feeds are available for all of the index topics like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/topics\/bankruptcy\" title=\"Bankruptcy\">bankruptcy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/topics\/solar-energy\" title=\"Solar energy\">solar energy<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/topics\/iraq\" title=\"Iraq\">Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week the Government Printing Office (GPO), the Office of the Federal Register (OFR), and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) jointly released a new, XML-based version of the Federal Register at FederalRegister.gov.
