Garment Workers&#8217; Union (ILGWU) sponsored a documentary, <em>With These Hands<\/em>, to celebrate its first fifty years.\u00a0 While previous labor films had not been successful,\u00a0<em>With These Hands<\/em> used Hollywood professionals\u2014the director was Jack Arnold, who would go on to direct 1950s cult classics such as <em>Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/em> and television episodes of popular shows\u2014and was much more popular with audiences.\u00a0 Ultimately, it was nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar in 1951.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/library\/\">Catherwood Library<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/library\/kheel\/\">Kheel Center<\/a>, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell ILR School<\/a>, are sponsoring the first public showing of <em>With These Hands<\/em> in almost fifty years.\u00a0 The film will screen at 5:00 pm in <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=Ives+Hall,+Cornell+University,+Tower+Road,+Ithaca,+NY&amp;aq=0&amp;oq=ives+hall&amp;sll=42.442703,-76.498375&amp;sspn=0.102736,0.154324&amp;vpsrc=0&amp;t=h&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=Ives+Hall,+Cornell+University,+Tower+Road,+Ithaca,+NY&amp;z=15&amp;iwloc=A&amp;cid=8206279824786247286\">105 Ives Hall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the film and its history, see the Kheel Center&#8217;s February 22 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/ILGWU\/announcements\/oneLongAnnouncementFromDB.html?announcementID=9\">announcement<\/a>, with a bibliography of archival materials in Kheel Center collections, written and compiled by\u00a0Katie Dowgiewicz, ILGWU Project Archivist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1950, the International Ladies&#8217;
