{"id":15,"date":"2010-02-12T09:19:08","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T14:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/02\/12\/olympics-and-the-law\/"},"modified":"2012-07-27T13:49:50","modified_gmt":"2012-07-27T17:49:50","slug":"olympics-and-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/02\/12\/olympics-and-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympics and the law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Vancouver 2010 Olympics logo\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/02\/vancouver-2010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/02\/vancouver-2010.jpg\" alt=\"Vancouver 2010 Olympics logo\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Sometimes work and play are intertwined, and so it is for sports lawyers and law students who really enjoy sports\u2014especially now as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouver2010.com\/\">2010 Winter Olympic Games<\/a> begin in <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/\">Vancouver, Canada<\/a>.\u00a0 Each sport has its own rules, and the Olympics themselves have any number of regulations and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tas-cas.org\/\">arbitration<\/a> decisions, in addition to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/Documents\/Commissions_PDFfiles\/Ethics\/Code-Ethics-2012.pdf\">code of ethics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Legal issues in the Olympics include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/en\/\">drug testing<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radio86.co.uk\/beijing-2008\/olympic-news\/6803\/china-cracks-down-on-olympics-copyright-infringement\">copyright<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inta.org\/TrademarkBasics\/FactSheets\/Pages\/ProtectionofOlympicTrademarks.aspx\">trademark <\/a>issues on the use of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acluutah.org\/olympictrademark.htm\">name<\/a>, logo, mascots, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inquisitr.com\/41108\/ioc-sends-cd-to-awia-committee-member-over-olympic-photos-on-flickr\/\">images<\/a> from the games; dealing with <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/olympics\/winter\/2010\/news\/story?id=4888119\">protesters<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museum.tv\/eotvsection.php?entrycode=olympicsand\">broadcasting rights<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/Documents\/olympic_charter_en.pdf\">Olympic Charter<\/a> provides the legal basis for the institution of the Olympics and must be consulted if you are reviewing any Olympics legal issue.\u00a0 Like corporations donating to political campaigns in the U.S., the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/en\/content\/The-IOC\/\">International Olympic Committee<\/a> has the status of a person and is responsible for sanctions against athletes and their organizations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/library\/research\/guides\/law-olympics.cfm\">Olympics &amp; International Sports Law Research Guide<\/a> provides an excellent explanation and links to the most important sources for Olympics and the law.
