{"id":36,"date":"2010-02-26T12:52:13","date_gmt":"2010-02-26T17:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/02\/26\/the-avon-global-center-for-women-and-justice\/"},"modified":"2010-02-26T12:52:13","modified_gmt":"2010-02-26T17:52:13","slug":"the-avon-global-center-for-women-and-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/2010\/02\/26\/the-avon-global-center-for-women-and-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"The Avon Global Center for Women and Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/02\/avon-center.jpg\" title=\"Avon Center for Women and Justice logo\"><img src=\"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/library\/files\/2010\/02\/avon-center.jpg\" alt=\"Avon Center for Women and Justice logo\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>Based at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/\" title=\"Cornell Law School home page\">Cornell Law School<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/legalresources\/\" title=\"Home page of the Avon Global Center for Women and Justice\">Avon Global Center for Women and Justice<\/a> provides an international forum for judiciary, governments, and civil society to work together to promote justice for women and girls who have been the target of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/gender\/violence\/en\/\" title=\"World Health Organization's Web page about gender-based violence\">gender-based violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The concept for the Center was born in 2008 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/s\/we\/c25151.htm\" title=\"Link to Senior Roundtable for Women's Justice at the U.S. Department of State Web site\">Senior Roundtable for Women\u2019s Justice<\/a> hosted by the U.S. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/\" title=\"U.S. State Department home page\">State Department<\/a> in Washington, D.C.  There, over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/s\/we\/102578.htm\" title=\"Link to list of judges who participated in the Roundtable\">seventy participating judges<\/a> from around the world expressed the need for a medium in which they could continue their dialogue and thereby facilitate ongoing change to the global and domestic status of women and girls.  Funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avoncompany.com\/women\/\" title=\"Home page of the Avon Foundation for Women\">Avon Foundation for Women<\/a> and supported by the Cornell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovation.cornell.edu\/\" title=\"Web site of Cornell Faculty Innovation in Teaching Program\">Faculty Innovation in Teaching Program<\/a>, the Avon Global Center is the first center of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>Four major initiatives serve to further the Center\u2019s mission:  undertaking clinical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/AVON-Global-Center-Projects.cfm\" title=\"Avon Center's project page\">projects<\/a>; providing legal research <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/judges\/index.cfm\" title=\"Link to judges page at the Avon Center Web site\">assistance for judges<\/a>; developing online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/legalresources\/\" title=\"Link to the Avon Center's legal resources page\">legal resources<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/discussionforum\/index.cfm\" title=\"Link to Avon Center's discussion forum\">discussion forum<\/a>; and organizing and hosting an annual conference and other substantive events.  This year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/AVON-Center-2010-Women-and-Justice-Conference.cfm\" title=\"Link to the 2010 conference page\">conference<\/a> entitled \u201cGender-Based Violence and Justice in Conflict and Post-Conflict Areas\u201d will be held on March 12, 2010 in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The Avon Center also sponsors the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawschool.cornell.edu\/womenandjustice\/Women-and-Global-Justice-Speaker-Series.cfm\" title=\"Link to Women and Global Justice Speaker Series\">Women and Global Justice Speaker Series<\/a> at Cornell Law School. Prominent speakers from all over the world speak on issues related to violence against women.
