{"id":157,"date":"2017-07-20T10:00:37","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T14:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/tech\/?p=157"},"modified":"2017-07-20T10:00:37","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T14:00:37","slug":"2017-legislative-data-and-transparency-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/tech\/2017\/07\/20\/2017-legislative-data-and-transparency-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"2017 Legislative Data and Transparency Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re back from the 2017 Legislative Data and Transparency Conference in Washington, DC, where technologists from the federal government and transparency organizations presented their latest open data work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past year, several government websites have completed initiatives that make their data more accessible and more re-usable: from mobile-friendly redesigns from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/congress.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congress.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/govinfo.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Govinfo.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gpo.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GPO.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to new repositories of bulk data for download, to initiatives that will support original drafting in formats suitable for publication. We were particularly excited to see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.law.cornell.edu\/metasausage\/downloads-and-related-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LII&#8217;s work on the Legislative Data Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being adopted in government information systems, as well as FDsys metadata in RDF. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke on a panel about data integration, along with my co-panelist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/govtrack.us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GovTrack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founder Josh Tauberer, and our moderator, GPO&#8217;s Lisa LaPlant. Each of us is finding new ways to pick up a legal text, learn what we can about it, and connect it to other legal texts and, particularly in LII&#8217;s case, real-world objects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This presentation was the latest installment in the ongoing work we&#8217;ve been doing to aggregate different data sources and connect them to one another, thus helping people navigate from what they know to what they don&#8217;t know and therefore making it easier for everyone to find and understand the law that affects them.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re back from the 2017 Legislative Data and Transparency Conference in Washington, DC, where technologists from the federal government and transparency organizations presented their latest open data work.
