This presentation surveys the state of the art in online visualization of legislation and the implications of such visualization for the ‘usability’ and ‘readability’ of law. The presentation will explore potential enhancements of widely available visualizations drawing on techniques from the field of information visualization, methods demonstrated on small scale sites or in non-legal contexts. A survey of current and possible approaches leads naturally to the question of the empirical or theoretical foundations which might underpin such visualizations. Is it possible to develop such foundations?
